An Interview with The Hammer Band’s New Chair

December 15, 2022

The Hammer Band (Lesley White, Program Manager):    Can you tell us about yourself?

Melonie Dixon:    My name is Melonie Dixon and I am a results-driven bilingual Banking Executive with over 26 years of success.  I am enthusiastic about making a difference, enjoy working with people, and leading with empathy.  During my downtime, I enjoy reading, playing recreational volleyball, and doing amateur home renovations.  I love singing and I sang for the Montreal Gospel Jubilation Choir for a few years.  Lastly, I have 3 adult children whom I enjoy spending time with.

THB:    Why did you become involved in THB, and what has your involvement looked like over time?

MD:     I chose to be a board member of THB about 2 years ago because I believe that THB is making a difference in the lives of many children in underserved communities both in the short and long term. Life can be difficult at times and the THB is providing its students with skills and tools to be successful and productive adults.

THB:    What are some of the skills you have that will help you be a successful board chair?

MD:     The board chair is an essential position and it is important the chair is effective in her duties.  I believe the most important skill that I possess is the ability to listen to others, effective communicator and get things done.

THB:    How would you characterize the board’s role at THB, and how, if at all, do you see it changing going forward?

MD:     We have a very diverse and experienced board with all the necessary skills to steer THB toward a sustainable future by ensuring we have robust governance, financial management policies, and sound leadership.  I think going forward we are going to see new members join the board which I am very excited about because new members bring new ideas and additional skills which will enhance our board.

THB:    One last question Melonie, if a child considering joining THB were here right now, what would you say to them?

MD:     I would say to both the child and the parent that this decision will be the best decision they could make.  The THB program will help with increased self-esteem, empathy, and above all improved academic performance.
